So...if a stranger received a snippet of your life's message, what would you want her to hear?
We've all heard the bits taken from interviews, political speeches and conversations of those in the spotlight. Sometimes, these contextually inaccurate words paint people in a negative light to those who have never met them. But not all snapshots have to be negative. What if every piece carried the DNA of encouragement for others? You have what it takes to do this!
It's a fact of life that most people you encounter will not get to know the full You. Outside of close friends and family, the public will experience you to a small degree. It may be through a grocery counter interaction, a hello on the street, or even a glimpse of you from far away.
But do we realize that in every encounter, we have the means to influence our world?
A few years ago, I was walking to the Boston subway to head to work. I was wearing a dress with these skin-tight brown leather stiletto boots with a pointed toe. A little girl and her mom walked past, and the girl's eyes widened as she looked at my shoes. It really made me think about my wardrobe choices!
Why? Because there's a message on my life that I take seriously. That message is that I am a woman, whose purpose goes far beyond my sexuality. While sexuality is part of who I am, it's not the 90% of my life's purpose that our culture often tells us. So I am not going to carry myself daily as if that's my main function.
Then I thought about the girls and boys around me. I remember growing up looking to all of the adults in my world to show me what humanity looks like. What am I teaching them about femininity and sexuality from the way I speak, act, and dress? What will be etched into their minds on account of my everyday choices? I will probably never have an opportunity to explain my actions to them. So what I say by how I carry myself in a moment must be enough.
What is the message on your life? When you walk out into the world and speak your message to those you influence (whether you're trying to influence or not), where are you leading them? Does your wardrobe tell them what they need to hear? Don't feel pressured, but feel empowered! Your life matters, so live it like it does! We need you!
