When Wardrobes Speak: A Chat About Power
So one day your wardrobe walked into a bar. What did it say? I don't know, that's up to you. 😃
Seriously, we all know that what we wear precedes us. But why does that happen? Is it because people judge books by their cover, which is totally wrong? Or does this tendency point to something deeper and potentially helpful?
I used to be a clearance-rack addict at little fast-fashion stores. Yes, the ones with a plethora of polyester pieces. Sure, it was in part because I was right out of college and didn't earn much money. But as I got older and began to make more money, I remember finding this habit hard to break. You can take the woman out of the poly-blend, but you can't take the poly-blend mentality out of the woman. Not by yourself, anyway. 😉
It wasn't until I got a job as an Executive Assistant that I began to realize how buying cheap was a result of my cheapening myself. I recognized it one day as I was shopping for work clothing. I heard God saying through an utterance in my spirit, "Why don't you shop the current season's clothing?" I knew deep down that my answer had to do with not feeling worthy of the nicer clothes, like paying full price was frivolous or wasteful. They were more expensive, which was no longer a problem for me. But still I felt like they weren't "for me."
This spoke to a deeper issue in my heart. See, clothing is just an outward representation of an unseen reality. It wasn't merely the clothes I didn't think I merited, but the life that the clothes represented. Somewhere in my life, I'd believed the lie that I wasn't a powerful woman. Such lies can come from our home life, our social group, even media we consume. Kinda like when we watch movies where the villain is a wealthy Wall Street woman who tromps on people for her own gain. We may vilify certain characteristics even if those things are, in themselves, positive. Isn't strength and position in a woman an excellent thing? It is if she uses it to serve others, yes?
Thankfully, I identified the source of the issue and was able to ask God to heal of my heart. Now, I have no doubt He has created us all to be powerful! So I seek out clothes that suit who I am.
Are there types of clothes you've passed off as "not your style" that really just make you feel unworthy? Maybe it's not business clothes for you; maybe it's clothes that are glamorous, bold in color, edgy, etc. If you've ever said, "I like that, but I can't pull it off," chances are that you've disqualified yourself somewhere in your past. Ask God what happened to make you feel that way, and let Him heal you. You're worthy of clothes that exude power, beauty, and all that you were made to carry!
